Brigham Young, among his other "callings," was a brilliant city planner. His masterpiece, Salt Lake City, upon which all other cities and towns in Utah are based, is known for its wide streets, large square city blocks, and a street numbering system that eminates out from the center of town, in this case, the Mormon temple. At first, this system can seem a bit strange to the visitor, but once deciphered, one finds it very difficult to get lost in Utah's Capitol City. The exception is a hilly three to four block section of Salt Lake City on the west side of Capitol Hill, known as the "marmalade district," named for the fruit trees that still adorn many of its steep and narrow winding streets. Words like "charming" "bohemian," "victorian," "informal," even "unorthodox" don't do justice to this tightly packed little community. One is reminded, vaguely, of breezy residential enclaves in southern cities like Atlanta and Nashville, or sections of Beacon Hill, in Boston. Although the marmalade retains Brigham's numbering system, it's best experienced on foot, and we suggest comfortable shoes. The Capitol Hill Condominium is in the heart of the marmalade, and it comes with great views, modern amenities, plenty of parking, and easy access to the Capitol grounds and downtown. The Capitol Hill Condominium is managed by Chris Bowden.![]() |
